Franco is dying in a hospital in Madrid. Prince Juan Carlos goes to the Sahara Desert in a last-ditch attempt to resolve with King Hassan II of Morocco the conflict over the Spanish colony. As the diplomatic mission arrives in Aaiun, so does a troupe that performs musical reviews. The Moroccan king then organizes a strange mobilization a “march” using civilians who will occupy the disputed territory amid a carnival atmosphere. The soldiers, always fighting their natural instinct, are not quite sure how to react to an “invasion” so removed from military tradition. With this historical and sexual backdrop, a series of events will decidedly change the lives of the Spaniards. In the GREEN MARCH, there are no luxurious special effects, only desert lust.

Romare Bearden’s art captures the diversity and richness of his life. With roots in North Carolina, Bearden migrated north at an early age, living in industrial Pittsburgh, vibrant Harlem, and, later in his life, on the Caribbean island of St. Martin. These four locales and his memories of their people, music, colors, and stories form the basis of Bearden’s collages and paintings, whose style exhibits a uniqu blend of cultural influnces from Harlem, Europe, and Africa.
This film traces Bearden’s entire career, including his paintings and watercolors of the 1940s, experimental collages of 1964, mature collages of the next two decades, large-scale public murals, and late landscapes. The documentary also features commentary by art historians, artists, and others who knew Bearden, including Wynton Marsalis, Albert Murray, and Emma Amos. Narrated by Morgan Freeman with readings by Danny Glover.

Though the original Italian title translates to “Six Women for an Assassin,” the American title, Blood and Black Lace, is far more evocative of the psychosexual nature of this elegant slasher picture. The thin plot concerns a respected Italian fashion house, a murdered model, cocaine, and a tell-all diary that seems to implicate just about everyone connected with the house of style. The disappearance of the diary initiates a wholesale slaughter of the remaining models. Mario Bava’s stylish exercise in mayhem lovingly delivers every elaborate killing with dreamy assurance. As the stalker, a faceless figure wrapped up in a trench coat, makes a move for his next gorgeous victim, Bava’s prowling camera snakes through sets, rushes down hallways, and generally takes off like a low-budget Hitchcock flick on speed. By contrast, Bava runs through the police investigations with a perfunctory air–the lifeless scenes, which aren’t helped by the flat English dubbing, feel like he’s marking time between the murders–and when the identity of the black-clad killer is revealed it almost seems beside the point. As the narrative melts into a near abstract display of choreography and color (with an often troubling misogynist edge), exposition and psychological explanations seem oddly out of place in this elaborate dance of death. As a traditional thriller it lacks any genuine thrill, but as a piece of cinematic spectacle it has moments of dreamy, disconnected beauty. –Sean Axmaker

Thanks in large part to its meticulous re-creation of the late 1960s and early ’70s rock scene and the uncannily authentic performance by Val Kilmer as legendary Doors front man Jim Morrison, Oliver Stone’s hypnotic film biography is standing the test of time. Capturing the carefree mood of the Age of Aquarius, the film charts the meteoric rise of the Doors on the California club circuit (including a memorable scene showing the creation of the hit “Light My Fire”), and chronicles the band’s exploits with hallucinogenics and Morrison’s battles against charges of public indecency on stage. Kilmer’s performance is hauntingly perfect, and performances by Meg Ryan, Kathleen Quinlan, and Kyle MacLachlan are similarly impressive. The movie doesn’t fully probe the depths of Morrison’s character, but as a portrait of excess it is vividly tru to the spirit of the self-destructive poet known to his fans as “The Lizard King.” –Jeff Shannon

Movie critic Roger Ebert summed it up very succinctly: “Of all of the Star Trek movies, this is the worst.” Subsequnt films in the popular series have done nothing to disprove this opinion; we can be grateful that they’ve all been significantly better since this film was released in 1989. After Leonard Nimoy scored hits with Star Trek III and IV, William Shatner used his contractual clout (and bruised ego) to assume directorial duties on this mission, in which a rebellious Vulcan (Laurence Luckinbill) kidnaps Federation officials in his overzealous qust for the supreme source of creation. That’s right, you heard it correctly: Star Trek V is about a crazy Vulcan’s search for God. By the time Kirk, Spock, and their Federation cohorts are taken to the Great Barrier of the galaxy, this journey to “the final future” has gone from an embarrassing prologu to an absurd conclusion, with a lot of creaky plotting in between. Of course, die-hard Trekkies will still allow this movie into their video collections; but they’ll only watch it when nobody else is looking. After this humbling experience, Shatner wisely relinquished the director’s chair to Star Trek II’s Nicholas Meyer. –Jeff Shannon
